This has been an interesting time for Magic: The Gathering. Wizard’s of the Coast has had to innovate quite a bit to keep “Magic” going without “The Gathering”. Now that we have that pun out of the way, we can get to the updates.
WotC has done a great job responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, empowering both their staff and player base to keep themselves safe. Here is a list of the initiatives they have introduced in light of the current situation. One of the coolest, and most appreciated by the community, has been FNM at Home.
“State of the Game” was released this week, with some splashy changes slated to take place this week, including LIVE 8-person drafts and the release of Ikoria, as well as a slew of other changes.
“Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths” is upon us! The new set that features a ton of big, mythical creatures and planeswalking adventurers hits Magic: The Gathering Arena this Thursday, April 16th. An early access streamer event starts on April 15h at 8am PST! This set has some impressive crossover art with Godzilla, and you can see all of these beautiful new crossover and alternative art cards here.
Ikoria introduces several new mechanics, which would be good to familiarize yourself with, as they look to be meta defining for standard moving forward. Cycling returns, but they have added Keyword Counters, Mutate and Companion. You can get a full explanation of each of these mechanics here.
With new mechanics and interactions comes new weird judge calls! WotC got ahead of the curve and made some Oracle changes to reflect new mechanics and creature types, and how they interact with older cards.
Take a look at the full “Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths” card list here.
Along with the new set comes a new Commander product, with a bunch of new cards. While there is no great way to play with friends in person right now, the internet has worked hard to make sure folks still have options to play commander with their friends online. The community has also set up a Discord server so you can find paper games with people.
This week saw a Banned and Restricted announcement.Only Lutri, the Spellchasewer was banned in Brawl, so this does not have a big impact on most of the player base.
Finally, they made a change to a forthcoming card, Spacegodzilla, changing its name from “Spacegodzilla, Death Corona” to “Spacegodzilla, Void Invader,” claiming that the name was chosen before any information about COVID-19 was revealed. The full statement can be found here.
